  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 21, 2014) – The Rutgers softball team dropped its opener of the 2014 NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic, 5-2, to James Madison Friday afternoon in Clearwater, Fla. The Scarlet Knights’ second game of the afternoon against the College of Charleston (5 p.m.) has been postponed until Sunday at 9 a.m. due to inclement weather.

The Scarlet Knights (3-3) jumped out to an early 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) smacked a single in her first at-bat and junior Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) grounded out to shortstop three batters later to plate Huang.

The Dukes (6-5) gained their first lead of the contest in the bottom of the second inning, as Catherine Calvin recorded a two- RBI single with two outs to put James Madison ahead, 2-0. From there, James Madison did not look back, tacking on two in the bottom of the third and adding another in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 5-2 win.

Freshman Carly Todd (Deptford, N.J.) recorded her third RBI of the season in the top of the fourth inning, hitting a single up the middle to score Bates. But RU was able to register just one hit in the final three frames, as JMU’s Heather Kiefer allowed four total hits in 7.0 innings of work.

Junior left-hander Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) took the loss, allowing four earned runs and six hits in 6.0 innings pitched.  She dropped to 1-2 this season.

Senior Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) had her five-game hitting streak to start the season snapped against the Dukes.

Rutgers is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 22, taking on DePaul at noon and UMass at 2:30 p.m. at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. The Scarlet Knights will play the College of Charleston at 9 a.m. on Sunday before the team’s originally scheduled 11 a.m. matchup with No. 23/22 Louisiana-Lafayette.
