Rutgers Splits First Day of Action at FAU Worth Invitational

  • BOCA RATON, FL --The Rutgers softball team (2-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) opened the Florida Atlantic Tournament on Friday, Feb. 21 with an 8-1 loss to the UCLA Bruins (11-1), the top ranked team in the nation. The Scarlet Knights then bounced back to defeat Florida Atlantic University (7-7), 3-1.

    In her first appearance of the season, Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) pitched three innings against the Bruins, striking out three. Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) took the mound for the fourth and fifth innings, leaving the game with a strikeout and Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA) finished the game, pitching the last two innings, striking out one.

    The Scarlet Knights got on the scoreboard with two outs in the sixth inning when Jen Jacoby (Agoura Hills, CA) crossed the plate on Meaghan Asselta’s (Ramsey, NJ) double to left field. The Bruins scored four runs in the sixth inning to pull away with the win.

    FAU scored the first run of the second game in the third inning off of a double to center field, but the Scarlet Knights tied up the game in the fifth inning when Crystal Vargas reached home on a passed ball. Rutgers pulled ahead when Courtney Love (Seabrook, TX) scored on Jenny Card’s (Miami, FL) base hit to left field. A triple from Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA) advanced Card and increased Rutgers’ lead to 3-1.

    Cosentino improved her record to 1-1, relieving Koehler after four innings. Cosentino walked one and struck out two with no runs scored and no errors. Koehler gave up two hits and struck out one.

    Rutgers will resume action in the tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22 against the University of Wisconsin. The Scarlet Knights will play against Florida International University at 1 p.m. and will wrap up the weekend in a game on Sunday against a team to be determined.
