Scarlet Knights Fall to UCLA in Championship Game

  • BOCA RATON, FL - The Rutgers Softball team (4-3, 0-0 BIG EAST) finished competition at the Florida Atlantic University “Worth” Tournament in Boca Raton, FL on Sunday, Feb. 23, falling to the No. 1 UCLA Bruins (15-1) in the championship game, 8-0.

    Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) started on the mound for Rutgers, pitching just over four innings with three strikeouts. Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA) came in the game to relieve Cosentino in the fifth inning but faced only two batters before getting hit. Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) finished up the game, facing the last five batters.

    Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) led the offense, going one-for-two in the game. The Scarlet Knights held UCLA to only two runs in the first four innings, both scored in the second, but the Bruins broke open the game in the fifth inning with six runs to end the game. Four of the six runs were scored with two outs in the inning.

    The Scarlet Knights earned a spot in the championship game with a 3-1 record at the tournament, defeating FAU (3-1), Wisconsin (1-0) and FIU (3-1) and falling to UCLA (8-1). UCLA, currently ranked the top team in the nation, went into the final game of the tournament with a 4-0 record, defeating FAU (7-0), FIU (3-0), LIU (7-0) and Rutgers.

    Rutgers will next compete at the Florida State Invitational, March 7-9. The team will wrap up its tournament competition in Rock Hill, SC at the Winthrop Invitational, March 14-16. The regular season will be March 18 at the University of Virginia.
