PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 18, 2013) – In its 2013-14 season opener, the Rutgers swimming and diving team put forth a tremendous effort in the first day of the Sonny Werblin Invitational held at the Rutgers Aquatic Center Friday evening. The Scarlet Knights posted the top times in every one of the five events held during today’s session.
Sophomore Joanna Wu (Kent, Wash.) started the evening for RU, claiming the best finish in the first event of the day, the 500 freestyle. Wu touched the wall at 4:59.67 -- nearly nine seconds faster than the second-best finisher.
In the next event of the evening, the 200 yard I.M., the Scarlet Knights posted the top four best times. Sophomore Morgan Pfaff (Red Lion, Pa.) led the way with a time of 2:06.64, while junior Greta Leberfinger (Chatham, N.J.) followed with a time of 2:08.63. Senior Allyson Perrotti (Branford, Conn.) and freshman Rachel Stoddard (Hillsborough, N.J.) rounded out the top-four with times of 2:09.43 and 2:10.15, respectively.
Senior Mary Moser (Wyomissing, Pa.) would then lead all swimmers in the 50 free with a mark of 24.22. Rutgers rounded out the first day of action with a one-two finish in the 400 yard medley relay. The foursome of Pfaff, Leberfinger, Sophie Netwon (Leesburg, Va.) and Moser crossed the finish line at 3:57.20, while the team of Wu, Perrotti, Brittany Guinee (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) and Chelsea Rolin (Saint-Lazare, QC, Canada) finished right behind them at 3:58.26.
In the 3-meter diving event, senior Nicole Scott (Toronto, Canada) took the top spot with a score of 313.60, while first-year Scarlet Knight Rebecca Gross (Manchester, Pa.) recorded the second-best mark of 277.75.
Rutgers concludes the two-day meet tomorrow morning at 9 a.m., with the first swimming event being the women’s 200 medley relay. The women’s 1-meter dive marks the first diving event of the day at 10 a.m.
