Rutgers Swimming and Diving Inks Four During Early Signing Period
Four student-athletes sign NLIs for upcoming season

  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (November 19, 2013) – The Rutgers swimming and diving team has added four new members for the 2014-15 season during the early signing period, announced head coach Phil Spiniello. Rutgers welcomes Emily Erwin (Jenkintown, Pa.), Larissa Neilan (Orange, Va.), Julianne Torres (Piscataway, N.J.) and Addison Walkowiak (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) “To the Banks” next academic year.   

    Coach Spiniello on Erwin – “We are very excited to have Emily join our team. She is a great fit for our program here at Rutgers coming from Germantown Academy, with a great background in distance freestyle and I.M.  She is a very talented and versatile swimmer and we are very excited to see her immediate impact in our program next season.”

    Notes – Member of the Germantown Academy swimming and diving team … team is the three-time undefeated Inter-A.C. Champions and three-time Eastern Champions … Junior National Qualifier … captured second place at the Eastern Swimming Championships in the 500 freestyle and also finished fourth in the 200 I.M. … intends to major in political science/East Asian languages and area studies … has two siblings; Alex and Alison … daughter of Louise and Mark Erwin.

    Coach Spiniello on Neilan – “Larissa is an excellent addition to our team.  She is a talented and up-and-coming breaststroke and I.M. swimmer, which will help us tremendously next season. Larissa has the potential to do great things for our program and we are really looking forward to her days as a Scarlet Knight.”

    Notes – Four-year member of the Orange County High School swimming and diving team … top-16 finisher in the 100 breaststroke all four years … Scholastic All-American … National Club Swimming Association (NCSA) Juniors Finalist … Collegeboard Academic Award recipient … National Honor Society Inductee … intends to major in nutrition/sports medicine … has one sibling; Alix … daughter of Susanne Tomillon and David Neilan.

    Coach Spiniello on Torres – “We are thrilled to have Jules join our team.  She is a native of Piscataway, N.J., right here in our own backyard.  She comes from a fantastic club background with Scarlet Aquatics and will fit right in with our program.  Julianne is very strong in the freestyle events and we look forward to seeing her develop over her four years ‘On the Banks.’”

    Notes – Swims for Rutgers volunteer assistant coach Thomas Speedling at the Scarlet Aquatics Swim Club … Sectional Qualifier … N.J. Junior Olympic finalist in multiple events … intends to major in business-accounting/economics … has one sibling, Justin … daughter of Julius and Jennifer Torres.

    Coach Woodruff on Walkowiak – “It is exciting to have an athlete with Addy’s potential coming ‘To the Banks.’   Her poise and athleticism will serve her well as we enter the Big Ten.”

    Notes – Varsity diver for Ballston Spa High School … trains with the Flip n’ Rip Diving team, coached by Maria Coomaraswamy Falkenstein … team captain of both her varsity high school and club teams …  named most outstanding diver at her high school … five-time sectional champion … 2011 New York state champion … four-time AAU National Champion … five-time Junior Olympic finalist … high school All-American … Zone A champion on 3-meter … two-time regional champion … placed eighth on 3-meter and 21st on 1-meter at the 2013 US Diving Junior National Championships … captured fifth on 3-meter and seventh on 1-meter at the 2013 USD East Junior National Diving Championships last spring … sectional swimmer in the 50 freestyle, medley relay and 200 freestyle relay … intends to major in chemistry … has four siblings; Spencer, Taber, Paris and Zeke … daughter of Darcy and Dave Walkowiak.
