Scarlet Knights gear up for first BIG EAST meet of the season

STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 29, 2009) – The Rutgers swimming and diving team hits the road for a Friday-Saturday meet in Storrs, Conn. against Connecticut and Villanova. Friday’s contest begins at 6 p.m., while action starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Last season, RU defeated UConn 191-162 and upended VU 190-158 at the RU Aquatic Center.  The Scarlet Knights were led by Kirstin Fontana (San Diego, Calif.), whograbbed the gold in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke.
 
The relay squads also dominated for Rutgers, as the quartette of Kasey Kesses, Shayna Longacre (Barto, Pa.), Brianne Lindblad (Kent, Wash.), and Michaela Nilsson (Charlotte, N.C.) captured the 200 medley with a time of 1:46.33. Kesses and Longacre teamed up with Cat Whetstone (Haven Beach, N.J.) and Jackie Klein (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) to win the 400 medley with a time of 3:53.04.

The Scarlet Knights went 3-0 in the BIG EAST last season, finishing fourth at the BIG EAST Championship. The squad returns All-Americans Whetstone (Back/Fly) and Longacre (IM/Breast). Captain Erin Saunders (Holmes, Pa.) will lead the divers this season
