PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Nov. 18, 2009) – Rutgers senior captain Catherine Whetstone (Haven Beach, N.J.) earned BIG EAST Swimmer of the Week for her performance against West Virginia, the conference announced Wednesday. The honor was the second for the Scarlet Knights this season, as Shayna Longacre (Barto, Pa.) grabbed the accolade after the UConn/Villanova meet.
Whetstone led RU to a 159-125 win in a dual meet against West Virginia. The Haven Beach local beat the field in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke. In the 100, Whetstone finished with a time of 55.82, while the captain touched the wall in 2:03.20 to earn her second win of the day.
Whetstone led the 200 medley relay squad - followed by Longacre, Taylor Curado (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Brittany Kuras (Canandaigua, N.Y.) – to a 1:45.19 finish for first place overall.
RU steps out of conference play next weekend, traveling to Cambridge, Mass. for the Harvard Invitational.
