PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Sept. 24, 2012) – The Rutgers tennis team showed strong play in both singles and doubles competition at the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I., over the weekend. The tournament was flighted, with results being generated from draws of individual singles and doubles tournaments rather than team scores.

“We had three days of strong competition,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “The team competed hard. We’re a young team and I know with the success this gives them a lot of confidence competing against the best.”

The Scarlet Knights were one of six teams participating in the tournament, including Binghamton, Boston College, Boston University, Brown and Providence. The tournament featured top teams from the region, including Boston College and Brown, who finished No. 4 and No. 7 respectively in the final Northeast rankings from last season. Rutgers concluded the year at No. 9.

Sophomore Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) led the squad in singles competition, winning all three of her matches in her draw, including a 6-4, 7-5 defeat of Ina Kaupplia from Boston College. She also downed Binghamton’s Shea Brodsky, 6-2, 7-6 (4) and Alexis Tashiro (2-6, 6-4, 6-2).

Freshman Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) made the finals in her draw and won two out of three matches as she picked up victories over Boston College’s Sarah Dalton with scores of 6-4, 7-6 (5) and Brown’s Ammu Mandalap (6-4, 6-0). Classmate Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) also won two out of three matches, winning the consolation final.

The combination of Balsamo and Zein also notched two wins in doubles play and advanced to the semifinals before falling to competitors from Brown. The pair picked up a 9-8 (8) victory over Craft/Davis of Boston and then clinched a 9-7 win over Kandath/Uberoi of Brown. Rutgers partners, sophomore Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.) and freshman Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.), also picked up three doubles victories.

The Scarlet Knights are next scheduled to compete at the USTA Invitational from Oct. 6-8 at the U.S. Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
