PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 17, 2013) – In its first BIG EAST match of the season, the Rutgers women’s tennis team defeated Cincinnati, 4-3, at the Atlantic Club in Manasquan, N.J., Sunday. The Scarlet Knights won four of the six contested matches in singles play to secure the victory.
RU, led by 10th-year head coach Benjamin Bucca, improved to 3-2 on the season. The Bearcats are now 2-5 in the 2013 campaign.
Junior Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) started the Scarlet Knights off by picking up a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Cincinnati’s Jasmine Lee. Freshman Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) followed that up with a victory of her own over the Bearcats’ Ashleigh Witte (7-5, 6-1). Petrini and Li each improved to 4-1 on the season to lead the team in wins.
Despite dropping the next two contests, Rutgers secured the match win in No. 5 and No. 6 singles competition. Freshman Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) defeated Hannah Wille (7-6 (5), 6-1), before RU sophomore Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) downed Cincinnati’s Sierra Sullivan (6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-2) in a tie-breaking third set to seal the contest for the Scarlet Knights.
In the opening matchup of doubles-play, Petrini and Li went up against Lee and Caitlin O’Gara of the Bearcats but did not finish. Cincinnati took the doubles point with victories in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles play.
Rutgers continues play at Army in West Point, N.Y. on Friday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m.
