PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 7, 2013) – Following its third sweep of the season, the Rutgers women’s tennis team will participate in two road matches this weekend. The Scarlet Knights will first take on West Virginia in Morgantown, W. Va., on Saturday, March 9 at 1 p.m. The squad will then head to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 10.
RU boasts a 6-2 record (3-0 BIG EAST) this season under 10th-year head coach Benjamin Bucca. The Scarlet Knights have won four-straight contests, most recently downing Connecticut (March 5), 7-0. Freshman Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) holds a team-best 7-1 record in her No. 2 singles spot, followed by junior Vanessa Petrini’s (Stamford, Conn.) 6-2 record in No. 1 singles. Freshman Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) has lost just once in seven matches in 2013.
The Mountaineers are 2-7 this season, coming off a 5-2 win over BIG EAST opponent Marquette on March 3. Rutgers also beat the Golden Eagles by a 5-2 score on March 1. WVU’s other victory came against Marshall, 4-3, on Jan. 26. Third-year head coach Tina Samara is at the helm. Last season, the Scarlet Knights beat WVU at home, 6-1, on April 15.
The Panthers sit at 4-5 and hold a 1-1 record in the BIG EAST. Pittsburgh most recently lost to California (Pa.), 4-3, on March 3. The squad’s conference win came on Feb. 23, defeating Villanova (6-1). The Panthers are led by first-year interim head coach Michaela Kissell-Eddins. Rutgers picked up a 6-1 victory over Pitt on April 14, 2012.
