  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 3, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s tennis team continues its season with two BIG EAST contests, taking on St. John’s and Syracuse. The Scarlet Knights will have a road matchup against the Red Storm in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., on Thursday, April 4 at 1 p.m., before returning to the RU Tennis Complex to take on Syracuse on Sunday, April 7 at 10 a.m.

RU is coming off a 1-1 week, downing conference-opponent Villanova (March 27) before falling to No. 36 Yale (March 30). Led by 10th-year head coach Benjamin Bucca, the Scarlet Knights have compiled a 10-6 record, including a 4-1 mark in league play.

Freshman Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) continues to lead Rutgers from her No. 2 singles spot, holding a team-best 12-4 record in 2013, including a 5-0 mark in BIG EAST action. Li and junior Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) have not lost a doubles match as a tandem in conference play this season, compiling a 4-0 record.

The Red Storm are currently 7-7 (2-1 BIG EAST). St. John’s is coming off a win over LIU Brooklyn, 6-1, on March 22. The team has picked up conference wins over Connecticut (6-1 on March 10) and Georgetown (4-3 on Feb. 21). The Scarlet Knights downed Connecticut, 7-0, on March 5. Head coach Taka Bertrand is in her first season at the helm. Last year, Rutgers picked up a 4-3 victory over St. John’s.

The Orange hold a 9-7 record overall and a 5-1 mark in conference play. Syracuse is coming off a 6-1 loss to Harvard (March 30), but had previously won four-straight matches, not giving up a single point. The squad’s only loss in BIG EAST play came at USF on Jan. 12, 6-1. The Orange are led by sixth-year head coach Luke Jensen. Rutgers fell to Syracuse, 4-3, last season.
