  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 13, 2013) – In its final regular season match of the season, the Rutgers women’s tennis team shutout BIG EAST foe Georgetown, 7-0, in Washington, D.C., Saturday. The Scarlet Knights recorded their sixth sweep of the season.

RU improved to 13-7 overall and 7-2 in BIG EAST play. Georgetown moved to 14-6 and 3-3 in conference contests.

“This was a highly-anticipated match for our team,” said assistant coach Hilary Ritchie. “From start to finish, the ladies played the right way with a lot of energy and a lot of good strategy. This was a great win for us beating a team with such a strong winning record as Georgetown has. It gave our girls a good boost of confidence looking forward to next week’s BIG EAST Championships.”

Despite dropping the opening doubles contest, the Scarlet Knights secured the point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Freshmen Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) and Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) started Rutgers off with an 8-5 win over Georgetown’s Kelly Comolli and Madeline Jaeger. The Scarlet Knights secured the doubles point as junior Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) and sophomore Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) defeated Hoyas Sophie Panarese and Michelle Pratt, 8-2.

In the No. 1 singles contest, junior Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) earned a hard-fought victory over Victoria Sekely of Georgetown in the tiebreaker (0-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3)). Freshman Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) followed that up by recording a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Kelly Comolli. Li improved to 8-1 in league play and 15-5 overall. Kayati earned her 13th win of the season, second on the team, by downing Jaeger in a 10-point tiebreaker (6-2, 5-7, 10-8).

Balasa, Zein and sophomore Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.) secured the shutout by each winning their respective matches.

The Scarlet Knights next participate in the BIG EAST Championships, held from April 18-21, hosted by USF in Tampa, Fla.
