PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 14, 2013) – Rutgers women’s tennis head coach Benjamin Bucca announced the squad’s 2013 fall schedule Wednesday afternoon.
“We are anxious to get started this fall,” said Bucca. “We have a demanding schedule as we compete against all the top teams in the region and it promises to be an exciting and challenging fall. I know the ladies on the team are anxious for this level of competition and will be up to the task.
This season’s schedule mirrors that of the 2012, in that the Scarlet Knights will for the second year in a row host NJIT for their season opener then head to Providence, R.I. for the Brown Invitational.”
RU welcomes the Highlanders to the Rutgers Tennis Complex on Wednesday, Sept. 11th for a 2 p.m. match. Last year, Bucca’s squad faced the Highlanders in a scrimmage to open the 2012 slate. Scores were not kept and the exhibition was geared towards individual play, with singles and doubles matches taking place between the two squads.
From September 20th through the 23rd, the Scarlet Knights will head north for the Brown Invitational. Boston College, Boston University and Binghamton University will also participate in the three-day tournament.
Boston College, Boston University and Brown concluded the 2012-2013 seasons as three of the strongest teams in the region. BC ranked third in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I Northeast Region Ranking, while BU and Brown came in at seventh and tenth, respectively.
The Scarlet Knights will participate in their second to last event of the fall at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Invitational in Flushing, N.Y. from Oct. 11th-13th. Last year, sophomore Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) made RU history as she won the “E” draw of the open singles flight- the first Scarlet Knight to win a singles draw at the USTA. Juniors Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.) and Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) were also impressive as they advanced to the finals of the doubles draw.
Rutgers closes out the fall season at the ITA Regional Championships between Oct. 17th and the 21st. Seven of the squad’s eight players were invited the 2012 tournament-- the most ever in Bucca’s 10 seasons at Rutgers. Senior Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) highlighted an impressive showing by the Scarlet Knights, where she advanced for the second year in a row to the semifinals of the singles draw.
RU concluded the 2012-13 schedule with a 14-9 overall record and an 8-4 mark in BIG EAST action. The Scarlet Knights came in fifth in the conference championships after winning their first round match against local metropolitan rival, St. John’s University.
