PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 12, 2013) – The Rutgers tennis team competed in a scrimmage against in-state rival NJIT Wednesday afternoon at the Rutgers Tennis Complex.
Scores were not kept and the exhibition was geared towards individual play, with singles and doubles matches taking place between the two squads.
“The team very played strong tennis yesterday afternoon,” said head coach Benjamin Bucca. “Last year we split against NJIT, but this year we decisively won the overwhelming majority of the matches. Under very demanding weather conditions, it was a very great start to the season.”
Rutgers returns seven letterwinners from last year’s campaign and added freshman Farris Cunningham (Houston, Texas) to the roster. NJIT, who completed the 2012-13 season with a 15-6 overall mark and as the National Invitation Tennis Tournament Champions, returns all its letterwinners from last year. The Scarlet Knights unofficially won 11 of the 14 matches played.
The Scarlet Knights finished the 2013 schedule with a 14-9 overall record and an 8-4 mark in BIG EAST action. The Scarlet Knights came in fifth in the conference championships after winning their first round match against local metropolitan rival, St. John’s University.
Rutgers returns to action on Friday, Sept. 20, as it heads to the Brown Invitational to face Boston College, Boston University and Binghamton University in the three-day tournament.
