PROVIDENCE, R.I. (September 23, 2013) – The Rutgers tennis team completed a competitive weekend of play at the Brown Invitational to open the 2013 fall season. Highlighting the three-day tournament were several appearances in main draw finals matches in both singles and doubles play.
“It was a very exciting weekend of tennis, with great competition,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “We had some really strong play with some thrilling victories. The level of competition was such where we did have some disappointing losses, but that’s exactly what we were looking for. We left the tournament tired but very satisfied with our level of play and are motivated to continue to progress as a team.”
Also participating in the tournament were Binghamton University, Boston College, Boston University, Brown University, Providence College, the University at Buffalo and the University of Massachusetts. Boston College, Boston University and Brown concluded the 2012-2013 seasons as three of the strongest teams in the region. BC ranked third in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I Northeast Region Ranking, while BU and Brown came in at seventh and tenth, respectively.
Junior Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and freshman Farris Cunningham (Houston, Texas) led RU over the weekend, advancing to the finals in their respective draws. Balsamo dropped consecutive sets by the identical score of 6-1 to Sara Kotz of Binghamton in the Black Singles Flight championship match, while Cunningham would drop the first set by a score of 6-2 to Annie DiMuro of Binghamton in the Blue Singles Flight finals before retiring from the match due to injury.
The tandem of Balsamo and sophomore Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) fell in the finals of the Eagles Double Flight to Alana Prinos and Jennifer DeLuca of Providence by a score of 8-6.
Zein also captured a third place finish in the Green Singles Flight, defeating Ammu Mandalap of Brown (8-6).
