  • EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (March 12, 2014) – The Rutgers tennis team (7-3, 1-1 AAC) won its fourth-straight match and improved to a perfect 3-0 at home following a 6-1 win over Delaware (3-4, 1-1 CAA), Wednesday evening at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. The Scarlet Knights won the doubles point and proceeded to take five of six singles matchups against the Blue Hens.

“This was a really strong and convincing win,” said head coach Ben Bucca, Jr. “We played especially strong tennis during the singles matches today. We’re playing with confidence and really looking forward to our spring break trip with three matches against three out of region teams.”

For the third-straight contest, Rutgers secured the doubles point, as the team recorded wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) and junior Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) topped Nataliya Naumova and Olivia Heim, 8-4 at No. 2, while sophomore Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) and freshman Farris Cunningham (Houston, Texas) teamed up to defeat Danea Jonjic’ and Kim Milla, 8-5, to close out doubles action.

In singles, senior co-captain Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) battled Delaware’s Dorothy Safron at the No. 1 spot, and came out on top in the tiebreaker, 8-7 (5).

Despite a loss at No. 3, the Scarlet Knights managed to come away with wins in the remaining singles matches by impressive scores. Li downs Safron, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, while senior co-captain Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) came away with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Naumova at No. 4.

At No. 5 singles, Balsamo blanked Heim, 6-0, in the opening set and closed out the match with a 6-1 win in the second frame.

Cunningham logged the final singles victory for Rutgers by a score of 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 over Milla.

The Scarlet Knights will trek to New Orleans, La. to battle Southern, Southeastern Louisiana and Tulane from March 16-19 for the squad’s annual spring break trip.
