  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 2, 2014) – Fresh off of wins against Temple and Fordham last weekend, the Rutgers tennis team (11-4, 2-1 AAC) will travel to Storrs, Conn., on Thursday, April 3 to play UConn (5-10, 0-3 AAC) at 2 p.m.

The Scarlet Knights picked up their second conference victory of the season when they defeated Temple, 6-1, Friday, March 28 at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. RU captured five of six singles matches and secured the doubles point in the win.

RU’s lone conference loss of the year came against Louisville on the road on Feb. 21. In addition to its victory over Temple, the Scarlet Knights also captured a league win against Cincinnati on Feb. 23 in Ohio.

On Sunday, March 30, Rutgers topped Fordham, 5-2, at the Atlantic Club to improve to a perfect 5-0 at home this season. Playing under the alternate simultaneous format, RU captured all five singles matches and dropped its lone doubles match, which was worth two points.

Three Scarlet Knights have 10 or more singles victories this season. Senior co-captains Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) and Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) each possess 10 wins, while sophomore Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) leads the team with an 11-4 record in solo action. Kayati improved to 3-0 in conference play after she downed the Owls’ Jordan Batey, 6-3, 7-6 (5), in the No. 3 singles match.

Sophomore Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) leads the squad with nine wins in doubles play, while junior Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.), sophomore Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas), freshman Farris Cunningham (Houston, Texas) and Petrini each have eight wins. Balsamo and Zein have teamed up for an 8-7 record when playing together in doubles action.

The Huskies enter the match after dropping a 4-3 decision to the Owls on Saturday, March 29. Connecticut, who lost five straight matches to begin the season, is led by Srna Stosljevic, who holds a 10-5 record in singles play. Stosljevic and Lucy Nutting lead the Huskies with eight wins together in doubles action.

UConn is 0-3 in AAC matchups, having faced Cincinnati (Feb. 28) and Houston (March 8) in addition to Temple.
