Tennis Tops Seton Hall to Close Road Slate
Scarlet Knights defeat in-state rival, 6-1

  • MENDHAM, N.J. (April 8, 2014) – In its final regular season road match of the spring, the Rutgers tennis team (13-4, 3-1 AAC) downed Seton Hall (10-8, 2-2 BIG EAST), 6-1, Tuesday afternoon at the Mendham Racquet Club. With the victory, RU extends its win streak to five-straight. Additionally, the Scarlet Knights have now won 10 of its last 11 matches.

    For the second-straight match, RU started the day by winning the doubles point. After dropping the No. 1 match, the Scarlet Knights rebounded by winning the next two. Sophomore Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) and rookie Farris Cunningham (Houston, Texas) defeated counterparts Madison Shoemaker and Julia Keenan of Seton Hall by a score of 8-4 at No. 2.

    In the deciding doubles match, junior Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and sophomore Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) teamed up to defeat Hannah Liljekvist and Alex Landert, 8-4, to secure the point.

    In singles action, Rutgers won the top five matches, while dropping the sixth.

    Senior co-captain Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) battled SHU’s Chloe Sher to a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 win at the No. 1 spot. Li followed at No. 2 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Liljekvist.

    Sophomore Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) captured her team-leading 13th singles win of the season at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Rocio Portela.

    Senior co-captain Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Balsamo closed out the team victory with wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Balasa topped Keenan by decisive scores of 6-0, 6-2, and Balsamo outlasted Seton Hall’s Shoemaker, 6-3, 7-5.

    Rutgers closes out the regular season campaign with a two-match homestand, starting Friday, April 11 against Villanova. The Scarlet Knights will host their final home contest of the season on Sunday, April 13 against St. Johns on Senior Day.
