Rutgers Tennis Falls to Syracuse, 7-0

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Jan. 31, 2010) – The Rutgers tennis team (0-1, 0-1) fell to Syracuse Sunday, 7-0, at the Drumlins Tennis Center. Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and Katherine Arlak (Leonia, N.J.) pushed their opponents to a third set, but it was not enough for the Scarlet Knights.

The day started as Emily Harman and Christina Tan of Syracuse (3-0, 2-0) upended Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) and Holzberg, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. The Scarlet Knights would lose at No. 2 doubles with Arlak and Christina Tran (Centreville, Va.) on the court. Leonora Slatnick (Austin, Texas) paired with Maryana Milchutskey (Holmdel, N.J.) to put up the best fight, but fell, 8-5.   
 
Harman defeated Zhang in straight sets – 6-2, 6-2 – at No. 1 singles to continue her undefeated streak this season. The best match of the day came from Holzberg, who took SU’s Alessondra Parra to three sets, but falling, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Arlak also pushed Syracuse’s Tan to a third set at No. 3 singles, but was edged, 6-1, 2-6, 10-2.
 
The Scarlet Knights will be back in action Thursday, Feb. 4 at the RU Tennis Complex to take on Fairleigh Dickinson at 2 p.m.
