NEW YORK, N.Y. (January 26, 2013) – The Rutgers University men’s indoor track & field team placed second at the 2013 Metropolitan Indoor Track & Field Championships held this past Thursday and Friday at the Armory Track & Field Center. RU won five events including the 60m dash, 400m, high jump, triple jump, and shot put.
Manhattan took home the title with 134 points followed closely by the Scarlet Knights in second having accumulated 131.5 points. Fordham finished in third with 110 points.
Senior Kevin Bostick (Englewood, N.J.) led the way winning both the high jump and triple jump. In the high jump, Bostick leaped his way to 2.07m (BIG EAST & IC4A Qualifier). Also recording BIG EAST qualifying marks in the high jump and adding to RU’s point totals were freshman AJ Vance (Egg Harbor Township, N.J. ) and senior Glenn Scheideler (Randolph, N.J.) with fifth place jumps at a height of 1.97m. Bostick also took first in the triple jump with a distance 14.76m (BIG EAST & IC4A Qualifier) with senior Adam Bergo (Planfield, N.J.) in second at 14.69m (BIG EAST & IC4A Qualifier).
Sophomore Kadeem Douse (Ewing, N.J.) took home the 60m title crossing the finish line in a time of 6.98 (BIG EAST & IC4A Qualifier).
Senior James Plummer (South Toms River, N.J.), who last week took the top spot in the shot put at the Great Dane Classic and also took home the shot put title at the Gotham Cup, also took first this week at the Metropolitan Championships throwing for 16.50m (BIG EAST & IC4A Qualifier) Plummer also took third in the weight throw going for a distance of 17.09m (BIG EAST & IC4A Qualifier).
Rutgers finished in the top two in the 400m with sophomore D’Andre Jordan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) leading the way in a time of 49.26 (BIG EAST Qualifier). Freshman Rajee Dunbar (Arlington, Va.) finished behind Jordan in second place in a time of 49.41 (BIG EAST Qualifier).
Jordan also took second to lead all Scarlet Knights in the 200m logging a time of 22.35 (BIG EAST Qualifier). Also scoring for Rutgers in the 200m were freshman Emeka Eze (Sayreville, N.J.) in third clocking in a time of 22.45 (BIG EAST Qualifier) and Dunbar in seventh with a time of 22.53 (BIG EAST Qualifier).
Senior Monroe Kearns (Jackson, N.J.) and junior Karon Purcell (East Windsor, N.J.) earned points for RU in the 800m. Kearns ran to a fourth place finish in a time of 1:55.00 (BIG EAST Qualifier) while Purcell followed in fifth clocking in with a time of 1:55.38.
The Scarlet Knights also picked up points in the distance events. In the 1000m, junior Curtis Richburg (West Orange, N.J.) claimed eighth place in his time of 2:33.56. Junior Steve Burkholder (Marlton, N.J.) logged a sixth place time in the mile finishing the event in 4:22.14. Junior Chris Banafato (Bridgewater, N.J.), in the 3000m, took eighth in a time of 8:51.32. Freshman Daniel Lee (Plainsboro, N.J.) claimed eighth in the 5000m with a finish in a time of15.38.06.
RU also got points from its relay teams. The 4x800 relay squad took third with Burkholder, junior Corey Caidenhead (Bergenfield, N.J.), Kearns, and Purcell teaming up for an 8:00.27 finish. The 4x400 relay squad finished in fifth place. Kyle Holder, Jordan, Dunbar, and Caidenhead combined for a time of 3:21.24.
Also highlighting the field events were senior Pat Gray (East Windsor, N.J.) with fourth in pole vault at a height of 4.50m and Emeka taking third in long jump at a distance 6.60m
