Rutgers reached the NCAA Track & Field Championships in the 4x400 in taking eighth overall at the East Regional and crossing the finish line with a new RU record.  The Scarlet Knights finished in a time of 3:35.22, resetting the previous benchmark of set by the same group at the Georgia Spec Towns National Team Invitational earlier in the outdoor season.  Together they took a first place time of 3:35.77 at the Georgia Spec Towns Invite.  RU’s quartet also placed fourth at the Bulls Invitational host by USF and sixth at the BIG EAST Championships.  The 4x400 team is making its first NCAA Championships appearance.

    James Plummer – Discus:

Plummer, who was named the Mid-Atlantic Region Men’s Field Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCA) on Monday, enters the NCAA Championships off a record breaking performance at the NCAA East Regional.  Plummer won the regional title by setting a new RU record at a distance of 61.27m (201’00”).  In early May, the senior Scarlet Knight was named the BIG EAST Championships’ Most Outstanding Field Performer in capturing his third conference discus title and setting a new championship record.  Plummer also won his third IC4A and Penn Relay discus titles during the outdoor season, in addition to being the top performer at the Georgia Spec Towns National Team Invitational and Fred Hardy Invite, where he set a new meet and facility record.  Plummer was also a three-time BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week honoree.

    Asha Ruth – Long Jump:

Ruth went for a distance of 6.12m on her final jump at the NCAA East Regional  to advance to the championships in Eugene, Oregon with a seventh place finish.  The 2013 BIG EAST Champion in the event, Ruth also captured the Colonial Relays and Bulls Invitational long jump titles this outdoor season.  Additionally, she placed third at the Georgia Spec Town National Team Invitational and took fourth at the ECAC Championships. Ruth, who is also a member of both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams also competing in Eugene, is making her second NCAA Championship appearance in the long jump after earning Second Team All-America honors last year in taking 16th with a leap of 6.17m (20’3”).
