EWING, N.J. – The Rutgers men’s track and field team sent several members to compete at the Lions Invitational on the campus of TCNJ, while a number of other student-athletes took part in the Penn Relays this weekend.
At the Lions Invitational, the Scarlet Knights placed 10 in the top three, including three individual event victories. Senior Kyle Grady (East Brunswick, N.J.) led the way on the track, winning the 110-meter hurdles with a BIG EAST and IC4A time of 14.48. Sophomore Nick Miehe (Elmwood Park, N.J.) took the top spot in the 1,500-meter run, clocking a BIG EAST qualifying time of 3:55.22.
Freshman Steve Werner (Newton Sq., Pa.) placed second in the 100-meter and qualified for both the BIG EAST and IC4A Championship with a time of 10.84. Werner also competed in the 200-meter, finishing fifth in 22.21.
Junior Ray Davis (Eatontown, N.J.) took third in the 400-meter hurdles to round out Rutgers’ performances on the track. Davis clocked a time of 56.34, a BIG EAST qualifier.
In the field events, senior Nick Syzonenko (Randolph, N.J.) won the high jump after clearing a BIG EAST height of 1.95 meters. Freshmen Kevin Bostick (Englewood, N.J.) and Adam Bergo (Plainfield, N.J.) went third and fourth, respectively, in the triple jump. Bostick recorded a BIG EAST leap of 14.07 meters to finish third, while Bergo took fourth with a jump of 14.04 meters. Bergo also competed in the long jump, posting a second-place finish with a jump of 6.79 meters.
Senior Brian Duggan (Staten Island, N.Y.) finished second in the pole vault, qualifying for the BIG EAST and IC4A after clearing a height of 4.80 meters. Duggan also competed in the javelin, going third with a BIG EAST qualifying throw of 55.68 meters. Also competing in a throw event was freshman James Plummer (South Toms River, N.J.) who took fourth in the discus with a toss of 46.27 meters. Plummer also took part in the Penn Relays, recording a throw of 41.26 meters in the discus.
Rutgers was also represented in the javelin and 4x400-meter at the Penn Relays. Junior Jeremy Pennino (Watchung, N.J.) won the College javelin with a throw of 64.34 meters, while sophomore Christopher Bradley (Nutley, N.J.) took sixth with a mark of 60.03 meters.
Senior Brandon Burkhardt (Dallas, Pa.) placed seventh in the javelin championship with a throw of 61.39 meters. The Scarlet Knights placed sixth in the IC4A section of the 4x400-meter relay, as freshmen Monroe Kearns (Jackson, N.J.), Ellis Mensah (West Orange, N.J.), and seniors Brian Sutherland (Edison, N.J.) and Bruce Owens (Wenonah, N.J.) clocked a time of 3:12.49.
