PRINCETON, N.J. – Rutgers senior sprinter Bruce Owens (Wenonah, N.J.) took home top honors in the 200-meter dash at his second-straight championship meet, en route to the men’s track and field team finishing third at the 2009 IC4A Outdoor Championship on Sunday, May 17 at Weaver Stadium in Princeton.
The Scarlet Knights amassed 55 points, scoring in a variety of event areas, to finish one point off of second place Liberty (56 points), while University at Albany won the meet with 68 points.
Owens, coming off a victory in the 200-meter dash at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship in May, took to the track and successfully captured the IC4A title. Owens ran a time of 21.22 to lead the pack and secure 10 crucial points for the Scarlet Knights. He continued to add to RU’s point total in his next event, placing second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.54.
Owens also ran on the third-place 4x100-meter relay, joining teammates Steve Werner (Newtown Sq., Pa.), Nii-Amon Roberston (Plainfield, N.J.) and Mike Demko (Hightstown, N.J.). The group crossed the finish line in 40.99 to help propel the Scarlet Knights.
Rounding out RU’s performances on the track was freshman Monroe Kearns (Jackson, N.J.) who took fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.35.
Rutgers received an all-around team effort, securing points in the field on its final day of competition as freshman Adam Bergo (Plainfield, N.J.) placed second in the high jump. The reigning BIG EAST Champion in the indoor high jump, Bergo successfully cleared a height of 7’1” to finish runner up.
The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Friday, May 29, and Saturday, May 30, for the NCAA East Regional at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, N.C.
