PISCATAWAY, N.J. (January 3, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s indoor track and field captured seven first place finishes at the two-day Rutgers Invitational held at the Indoor Bubble this weekend.
In all, the Scarlet Knights registered nine BIG EAST qualifying times in Sunday’s track events.
The 400m had four Scarlet Knights capture BIG EAST qualifying times. Redshirt junior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) crossed the finish line first in a time of 56.11 just ahead of sophomore Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.), who placed second with a time of 56.37. Freshman Alayna Famble (Stockbridge, Ga.), in third place, and senior Ekene Ugbaja (Edison, N.J.), in fourth place, also captured conference qualifying marks racing to times of 56.78 and 57.35 respectively.
RU had three BIG EAST qualifying times in the 200m. Junior Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) raced to a first place time and conference qualifying mark of 24.77, beating teammate and 400m winner Ruth by .04 seconds. Farquharson, who also had a BIG EAST qualifying mark in the 400m, also had a conference qualifying time with her fourth place time of 24.98.
Gillon recorded her second BIG EAST qualifying time in the 60m dash. Gillon took first clocking in with a time of 7.54.
The 60m hurdles saw freshman Kaprice James (Roselle, N.J.) edge out her teammate, sophomore Meagan Robinson (Burlington, N.J.) by .01 second clocking a time of 9.05.
In the 800m, sophomore Felicia O’Donnell (Franklinville, N.J.) raced to a time of 2:19.34 for a first place time with sophomore Allison Payenski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) close behind in second at 2:20.45.
Sophomore Christina Dibernardo (Woodbury, N.Y.) also raced to a conference standard in the 500m. Dibernardo took fifth in the event with a time of 1:15.98.
The Scarlet Knights also had a pair of field victories in the long jump and high jump on Saturday. Senior Shantal Athill (Piscataway, N.J.) took the top spot in the long jump at 5.27m while junior Kristen Bradley (Medford, N.J.) captured the number one position in the high jump at 1.65m.
In the triple jump, freshman Adrienne Williams (Hamilton, N.J.) took second reaching a distance of 11.34m and captured a BIG EAST qualifying mark.
The Rutgers women’s indoor track and field team returns to action taking on St. John’s and St. Joseph’s in Princeton, N.J. on Saturday, January 12.
