Rutgers Women’s Indoor Track & Field Takes Fourth at Metropolitan Championships
Scarlet Knights Win Three Events Led By Asha Ruth and Tylia Gillon

  • NEW YORK, N.Y. (January 26, 2013) – The Rutgers University women’s indoor track & field team placed fourth at the 2013 Metropolitan Indoor Track & Field Championships held this past Thursday and Friday at the Armory Track & Field Center. RU won three events including the 60m dash and long jump, as well as, a victory by the 4x400 relay team. 

    Columbia took home the title with 172 points followed by St. John’s in second with 111.5 points and St. Peter’s in third with 99.5 points.  The Scarlet Knights took fourth having accumulated 95 points.  

    The 4x400 relay team of junior Corryn Hurrington (Bowie, Md.), senior Ekene Ugboaja (Edison, N.J.), junior Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.), and redshirt junior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) ran their way to a first place time of 3:47.31 (ECAC Qualifier).  Gillon and Ruth would also collect the Scarlet Knights’ two other event victories. 

    Gillon logged the top time in the 60m dashing across the finish line with a time of 7.60 (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier).  Two other Scarlet Knights added to the point totals in the event with freshman Niyah Lamar (Parsipanny, N.J.) taking fourth in a time of 7.83, followed by Hurrington in fifth with her time of 25.32.

    Gillon also took second in 200m running to a time of 24.79 (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier), while teammate freshman Alayna Famble (Stockbridge, Ga.) collected points with an eighth place finish time of 25.49. 

    Ruth posted RU’s other event victory in the long jump.  She jumped her way to first place with a distance of 6.03m (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier).  Ugboaja earned points for the Scarlet Knights coming in sixth, jumping her way 5.58m (BIG EAST Qualifier).

    In other field events, junior Kristen Bradley (Medford, N.J.) tied for second in the high jump at 1.60m.  

    Rutgers also logged two other BIG EAST qualifying marks.  Hurrington took fifth in 400m with a time of 57.15 (BIG EAST Qualifier) and sophomore Meagan Robinson (Burlington, N.J.) claimed fourth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.02 (BIG EAST Qualifier).

    The Scarlet Knights also had several other finishes, many in the distance events, adding to their point total. 

    The 4x800 relay team took seventh. Senior Victoria Pontecorvo (Staten Island, N.Y.), senior Stephanie Krausser (Wall, N.J.), sophomore Allison Payenski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.), and sophomore Felicia O’Donnell (Franklinville, N.J.) combined for a time of 9:43.34. Payenski would also race to a fifth place finish in the mile clocking in at 5:07.88.  Junior Rachel Leeke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took eighth in the 500m with her time of 1:17.28, while O’Donnell registered an eighth place finish in the 1000m crossing the finish line in 2:59.25.  Additionally in 5000m, freshman Paige Senatore (Delsea, N.J.) took fifth recording a time 17:59.57 and junior Rashmi Singh (Flemington, N.J.) placed sixth with a time of 18:00.71.
