TAMPA, Fla. (March 15, 2013) – Junior Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) took home the 100m title and redshirt junior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) placed first in the long jump as the Rutgers women’s track & field team kicked off the outdoor season on Friday at the Bulls Invitational hosted by USF.
Gillon was one of three Scarlet Knights to capture BIG EAST & ECAC qualifying times in the 100m. Gillon won the event with a time of 11.48, while Ruth took fourth overall logging a time of 11.61. Sophomore Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.) rounded out the trio with a 12th place time of 11.93.
Rutgers also picked up four BIG EAST & ECAC qualifying times in the 200m. Gillon led the Scarlet Knights with a third place time of 23.90 with Ruth coming in fifth by clocking in at 24.21. Senior Ekene Ugboaja (Edison, N.J.) took sixth in a time of 24.23, followed by Farquharson in seventh with her time of 24.37.
Also earning a BIG EAST qualifying standard was sophomore Jillian Grant (Matawan, N.J.) in the 400m hurdles. Grant posted a time of 1:02.65 in the event for a fourth place finish.
In other track events, junior Ashley Decker (Newfield, N.J.) took fourth in the 1500m. Her time of 4:38.37 was just short of a BIG EAST qualifying time. Additionally, sophomore Felicia O’Donnell (Franklinville, N.J.) raced her way to a third place finish in the 800m crossing the finish line in a time of 2:17.43.
Ruth led RU in the field events with a first place long jump at a distance of 6.07m (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier).
Senior Alexandra Kelly (Florham Park, N.J.) placed fourth in the javelin with a distance of 43.16m (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier) with freshman Solveig Loeken (Randolph, N.J.) throwing 36.82m (BIG EAST Qualifier) in the event for ninth.
In the relays, Farquharson, Ruth, junior Corryn Hurrington (Bowie, Md.) and Gillon helped the 4x100 relay team to a third time of 45.71, while Grant, freshman Kaprice James (Roselle, N.J.), junior Rachel Leeke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Hurrington combined to give the 4x400 relay team a time of 3:55.04 for fourth place.
The Rutgers women’s outdoor track & field team returns to action at the Fred Hardy Invitational in Richmond, Virginia March 29-30.
