WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 6, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s outdoor track & field team claimed the 2013 Colonial Relay title on Saturday afternoon. Hosted by the College of William & Mary, the Scarlet Knights saw junior Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) repeat as the 100m champion, as well as first place finishes by the 4x100 and sprint medley relay teams in Saturday’s events.
RU led the 30-team field collecting 104 points en route to the title. Delaware finished in second (95 points), followed by Monmouth in third (87 points), Villanova in fourth (86 points), and Virginia Tech in fifth (69 points).
"It’s always great to win a team title particularly during the early stages of the outdoor season,” said head coach James Robinson. “The ladies came out and competed very well over the two-day competition. Our coaching staff is very proud of their effort and we'll use this victory to continue to build momentum towards championship season."
In Saturday’s events, Gillon defended her 100m crown by taking home the title for the second consecutive year in the event by posting a time of 11.75 (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier). Redshirt junior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) joined Gillon in the finals clocking in at 11.97 for fourth place.
The relay teams also gave the Scarlet Knights another pair of first place finishes. The 4x100 relay team of sophomore Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.), senior Ekene Ugboaja (Edison, N.J.), Gillon, and Ruth captured a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying mark of 46.36. Ugboaja and Farquharson also teamed with sophomore Christina Dibernardo (Woodbury, N.Y.) and junior Ashley Deckert (Newfield, N.J.) in the sprint medley relay for a first place time of 3:57.92.
Recapping Friday’s Results:
Ruth captured a first place distance of 5.93m (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier) in the long jump. Also in the long jump, senior Ekene Ugboaja (Edison, N.J.) placed fourth jumping to a distance of 5.60m (BIG EAST Qualifier).
RU also had a trio collecting points in the javelin led by senior Alexandra Kelly’s (Florham Park, N.J.) second place throw of 43.67m (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier). Freshman Solveig Loeken (Randolph, N.J.) took fifth with a distance of 40.51m (BIG EAST Qualifier) followed by junior Elaina Mezzasalma (Morganville, N.J.) in sixth at 39.69m (BIG EAST Qualifier).
Ugboaja has a second place time overall and first among collegiate competitors in the 400m. Ugboaja logged a finish time of 54.25 (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier), while Farquharson registered a sixth place finish overall and fifth among collegiate entries in 56.10 (BIG EAST Qualifier).
Farquharson later crossed the finish line in third overall and second among collegians in the 200m as RU finished in third, fourth, and fifth overall positions in the race. Farquharson captured a time of 24.19 (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier) followed by Ruth in fourth in a time of 24.28 (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier) and Gillon in fifth at 24.32 (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier).
Rutgers also garnered points from sophomore Jillian Grant (Matawan, N.J.) in the 400m hurdles with a ninth place time of 1:03.18 (BIG EAST Qualifier).
The Rutgers women’s outdoor track & field team returns to action at the Spec Town Invitational in Athens, Georgia on April 12-13.
