PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 4, 2013) -- The Rutgers women’s outdoor track & field squad currently sits in fifth place following day two action at the 2013 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships which saw redshirt junior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) capture long jump title.
Notre Dame currently leads the competition through eight events with 43 points followed by Connecticut with 39.75 points and Cincinnati in third with 37 points. Louisville comes in fifth following day two action at 37 with the Scarlet Knights right behind in fifth with 36 points.
Ruth, who also was the outdoor champion in the event last season as well, reached a distance of 6.14m to edge out second place Carlye Schuh of Marquette by .01m. Ruth wasn’t the only Scarlet Knight in the finals, also joining teammates senior Ekene Ugboaja (Edison, N.J.) and sophomore Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.). Ugboaja finished in third at 6.10m and Farquharson came in fifth at 6.04m. All three collected ECAC qualifying marks.
RU had a trio collect points for the Scarlet Knights in the javelin led by senior Alexandra Kelly’s (Florham Park, N.J.) second place performance. Kelly threw for a career-best 48.21m, 2.06m ahead of her previous high captured at last weekend’s Penn Relays. She finished just behind Cincinnati’s Emelie Larsson who went for 52.79m. Junior Elaina Mezzasalma (Morganville, N.J.) came in sixth at 43.53m followed by freshman Solveig Loeken (Randolph, N.J.) in seventh at 41.93m. All three of RU’s javelin results were ECAC qualifying marks.
Junior Kristen Bradley (Medford, N.J.) finished out the heptathlon on Saturday with a seventh place finish accumulating 4373 points. Competing in three events on day two, Bradley tied for fifth in the long jump (5.24m), took seventh in the 800m (2:36.13) and eighth in the javelin (26.09m),
Three Scarlet Knights will advance to Sunday’s finals in the 100m, 200m and 400m, all with ECAC qualifying marks. Two Scarlet Knights – Gabrielle Farquharson and junior Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) - reached the finals of the 100m. Gillon took seventh in the prelims with a time of 11.60, while teammate Farquharson finished in seventh just .05 seconds behind at 11.65. Farquharson will also race in the finals of the 200m alongside teammate Asha Ruth. Ruth won her qualifying heat and took third overall in the prelims with a time of 23.79, while Farquharson took sixth in a time of 23.75. Ekene Ugboaja took seventh in the preliminaries of the 400m with a time of 54.69 to be one of eight competing for the title on Sunday.
While not advancing to the finals on Sunday, three Scarlet Knights picked up ECAC qualifying marks in preliminary heats. Asha Ruth came in 10th in the 100m (11.73). Tylia Gillon posted a 12th place finish (24.13) and Christina Dibernardo placed 14th (55.92) in the 200m.
Action at the 2013 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships conclude on Sunday with the finals of the 100m, 400m, 800m 1,500m, 400m hurdles, women’s 100 hurdles, men’s 110 hurdles along with the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relays, triple jump, discus, women’s high jump and men’s pole vault.
