PRINCETON, N.J. (May 10, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s outdoor track & field began action at the ECAC Championship on Saturday highlighted by Asha Ruth’s (Bowie, Md.) fourth place finish in the long jump and Alexandra Kelly (Florham, N.J.) taking fifth in the javelin, as well as three Scarlet Knights and the 4x100 relay team advancing to racing in Sunday’s finals.
A redshirt junior, Ruth logged a fourth place finish in long jump as she leapt to 5.94m. Also in the long jump, teammate sophomore Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.) took 11th at a distance of 5.66m.
Kelly, a senior, placed fifth in javelin throwing for a distance of 45.16m. Also joining Kelly in the javelin competition were junior Elaina Mezzasalma (Morganville, N.J.) with an 11th place showing (42.37m) and freshman Solveig Loeken (Randolph, N.J.) in 16th place (39.56m).
Three Scarlet Knights advanced out of Saturday’s preliminaries and will be competing in finals of the 100m, 200m, and 1500m.
Junior Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) raced twice on Saturday in 100m action taking third overall in both the preliminaries and semifinals to advance to Sunday’s finale. In the prelims, Gillon won one of the four heats contested clocking in at 11.81. Later in the day in the semifinal heats, she took second in her heat and third overall with her time of 11.97.
In the 200m, Ruth was the final competitor to qualify for the finals. Ruth clocked in at 23.99, her fastest time of the season, to take eighth. Also racing was Faquharson, who just missed out on reaching the finals taking 10th place in a time of 24.17. She was just .04 seconds shy of her personal best.
Junior Ashley Deckert (Newfield, N.J.) will compete in the finals of 1500m after registering the final qualifying spot. Deckert raced to a time of 4:29.26 to take 12th in the preliminaries. It was her best time this season.
Also advancing to Sunday’s finals was the 4x100 relay team of Farquharson, Ruth, junior Corryn Hurrington (Bowie, Md.) and Giillon. The Scarlet Knight relay squad bounced back from last weekend’s baton drop at the BIG EAST Championships to record a second place time in the prelims. The squad posted a time of 45.43 for the top time in their heat.
