  • GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 25, 2013) – Rutgers’ women’s 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams are heading to the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships after qualifying at the NCAA East Regional held at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University on Saturday.

Both the 4x100  and 4x400 relay teams consisting of sophomore Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.), redshirt junior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.), junior Corryn Hurrington (Bowie, Md.) and junior Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) will head to Eugene, Ore for the Division I National Championships being held on June 5-8, 2013.  It is the first time in Rutgers school history the women’s relay teams have qualified for the national championships.

Ruth qualified for her second NCAA event after taking seventh in the long jump as one of 12 student-athletes to advance.  They will also join senior James Plummer (South Toms River, N.J.) who captured the 2013 NCAA East Region discus title on Thursday on the men’s side.

With the top three from each of the four preliminary heats advancing to Eugene, Rutgers finished in third in the first heat of the 4x100 and seventh overall to take the track, finishing with a time of 44.71.  It was the team’s fastest finish of the season, surpassing their previous best of 45.27 from their third place finish at Penn Relays. It was also a new Rutgers record set by the team.

Later in the evening the same quartet raced in the 4x400 to take eighth overall in crossing the finish line with a new RU record.  The Scarlet Knights finished in a time of 3:35.22, resetting the previous benchmark of 3:36.91 by the same foursome at last year’s BIG EAST Championships.

Also on Saturday, senior Alexandra Kelly (Florham Park, N.J) took 18th overall in javelin with a distance of 45.59m.
