  • BRONX, NY -- The Rutgers women’s track and field team won the Metropolitan Indoor Championships Saturday with at the Armory Track in Bronx, NY. The Scarlet Knights scored 172 points, followed by Seton Hall with 146 and Manhattan with 90. Columbia captured fourth (75) and St. John’s was fifth (59.5).

    Julie Culley (Lebanon, NJ) won the 3000-meter event in 9:17.12, an NCAA qualifying time, a school record and currently the second-fastest time in the country. Culley also anchored the distance medley team, which came in first in 11:48.71 with Belmax DeJesus (Fort Lee, NJ), Chanelle Williams (Piscataway, NJ) and Amonica Phipps (San Diego, CA).

    Claire Inskeep (Sayreville, NJ) won the 20-pound weight-throw with a throw of 52’8 ¾” and Candice Schultz (Beachwood, NJ) was seventh with a throw of 46’2”.

    Marsha Day (Leonardtown, MD) won the pole vault competition with a mark of 11’ ¼” and Kerry Ann Mitchell (East Orange, NJ) won the high jump (5’3”).

    DeJesus came in second in the mile run with a time of 5:09.43, Nicole Lombardy took third place (5:12.12) and Jamie Kerstetter (Monroe, NJ) was sixth with a time of 5:17.87. Sarah Cullen (Red Bank, NJ) was second in the shot put with a throw of 43’8 ½” and Sophia Anderson (Brooklyn, NY) was third (43’ ½”).

    Desiree Battle (Syracuse, NY) was second in the triple jump with a mark of 38’ 8 ¼” and Jacqueline Todd (Willingboro, NJ) was fifth in the 200-meter with a personal best of 25.05. Amina Zohny (Maplewood, NJ) was second in the 100-meter in 2:55.38 and Julie Clifford (Haworth, NJ) was sixth with a time of 2:58.59.

    Danielle Hobson (West Orange, NJ) was third in the pentathlon with 3,360 points, while Mitchell was fourth with 3,196 points. Angela Messerschmidt (Berwick, PA) was fifth with 3,182 points and Reva McEachern (Pennsauken, NJ) finished with 3,057 points for seventh place.

    Sherry White (Orange, NJ) finished the 500-meter run in 1:17.34 for eighth place and Hobson finished the 400 in fifth place with a time of 56.88. Shameka Marshall (Mizpah, NJ) took third in the hurdle with a mark of 8.86-meters. Julie Delimon (Stanhope, NJ) finished the 5000-meter in 18:09.7 for third. Jane Albright (Basking Ridge, NJ) finished in fourth place (18:14.89) and Kathryn Tappen (Morristown, NJ) took fifth place with a time of 18:21.49.

    The mile-run relay finished second with a time of 3:61.84 and the 4x800-meter relay ran in 9:35.45.

    The Scarlet Knights will compete again when they return to Bronx, NY, on Feb. 14 for the Armory Invitational.
