Rutgers Volleyball Drops Match to Cincinnati, 3-0
Zielinski notches 11th-straight double-double

  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 5, 2012) – The Rutgers volleyball team fell to BIG EAST foe Cincinnati in straight sets in Cincinnati, Ohio, Friday. The Scarlet Knights dropped the match to the Bearcats by set scores of 19-25, 23-25 and 20-25. Rutgers (15-5, 1-4 BIG EAST) moved to 2-12 all-time against Cincinnati (5-13, 3-2 BIG EAST).

    The Scarlet Knights tallied a .183 hitting percentage in the contest along with 39 kills, 38 assists, 43 digs and 5.0 blocks. The Bearcats hit .318 and totaled 47 kills, 44 assists, 46 digs and 10.0 blocks.

    In the opening set, Rutgers led by as many as five with the score at 14-9, but couldn’t hold on as Cincinnati went on a 5-0 run to close it out. Senior Alex Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) notched six of her match-high 13 kills in set one. Game two was much of the same, with the Scarlet Knights taking an early 8-4 lead but couldn’t hold on.

    Rutgers put together its best offensive performance in set three, earning 17 kills on a .239 hitting percentage. The Scarlet Knights were down by just one late, 21-20, but the Bearcats went on a 4-0 run to take the match.

    Jones had her most efficient hitting performance of the season, recording a mark of .478 on 23 attempts with just two errors. Her previous season best was a .455 hitting percentage against Rhode Island on Sept. 1.

    Senior setter Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) put together her 11th-straight double-double and 15th of the season with match-best 34 assists and 13 digs. Freshman Megan Stephenson (Burbank, Calif.) matched her career-best in kills, tallying 12. She also totaled 12 at Georgetown on Sept. 30.

    Rutgers is scheduled to continue play against Louisville in Louisville, Ky., on Oct. 7 at noon. The Scarlet Knights hold an 0-8 all-time record against the Cardinals.
