PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 27, 2012) – The Rutgers volleyball team fell in three sets to Connecticut in Storrs, Conn., Saturday. The Scarlet Knights dropped the match at Gampel Pavilion by set scores of 19-25, 15-25 and 23-25. Rutgers moved to 5-6 on the road this season and 9-20 all-time against the Huskies.
The Scarlet Knights (16-9, 2-8 BIG EAST) posted a .114 hitting percentage and totaled 35 kills, 35 assists, 64 digs and 7.0 blocks. The Huskies (15-10, 6-4 BIG EAST) hit .232 and recorded 41 kills, 38 assists, 63 digs and 11.0 blocks.
Senior setter Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) had a match-high 34 assists and notched 13 digs for her 19th double-double of the season. She moved into ninth place on Rutgers’ single season assists list with 1,088 in 2012. Zielinski is one helper shy of eighth place.
Freshman Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) led all players with 15 kills in the contest and compiled 10 digs, her eighth double-double of the campaign. Classmate Ali Schroeter (Bakersfield, Calif.) topped the team defensively with 15 digs.
Rutgers opened up the match with a 12-9 lead in the first set. Connecticut then went on a 6-0 run to take the lead and the Scarlet Knights couldn’t regain it. Rutgers didn’t lead in the second set. The Huskies opened the third game on an 8-0 run, but the Scarlet Knights rallied to tie it, 23-23, before Connecticut closed it out.
The Scarlet Knights take on St. John’s tomorrow, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. in Queens, N.Y. Rutgers is 8-10 all-time against the Red Storm.
