NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (Nov. 4, 2012) – The Rutgers volleyball team took the first set over BIG EAST-leading Notre Dame before falling in four sets to the Irish in College Ave. Gym, Sunday. The Scarlet Knights were downed by set scores of 25-23, 14-25, 21-25 and 18-25. The opening-set victory for Rutgers marked the first time it won a game over the Irish since Oct. 4, 1998.

Rutgers (18-10, 4-9 BIG EAST) hit .117 in the contest and tallied 44 kills, 43 assists, 59 digs and 6.0 team blocks. Notre Dame (19-6, 12-1 BIG EAST) recorded a .245 hitting percentage to go along with 55 kills, 53 assists, 72 digs and 15.0 blocks.

Freshman Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) led all players with 15 kills and accumulated a .625 hitting percentage. Senior Kylie Orr (Kettering, Ohio) played in just two sets and finished second on the team with nine kills. She is now two kills shy of 500 for her career.

Classmate Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) notched 39 assists in the contest to move into third on the program’s single-season list with 1,234 in 2012. She also tallied seven digs and has had her best season of her career defensively with 335. The senior is one dig shy of moving into 10th place on the school’s single-season digs list. Freshman Ali Schroeter (Bakersfield, Calif.) led the Scarlet Knights with 18 digs.

Rutgers put together a 17-9 lead in the opening game. Despite a late surge by Notre Dame to tie it at 21-21, the Scarlet Knights held on with the help of four first-set kills from Schmid. Rutgers fell behind early in the second stanza, 5-4, and couldn’t catch the Irish.

Notre Dame scored the first four points of the third game. The Scarlet Knights rallied tied the score, 13-13, before the Irish went on a 4-0 run that Rutgers couldn’t overcome. Orr totaled six kills in the set and the Scarlet Knights had their best hitting stanza of the contest with a mark of .262. Rutgers kept the second set close, but couldn’t chip away at the Notre Dame lead as the Irish took the match.

The Scarlet Knights return to College Ave. Gym to take on St. John’s on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. for their final home match of the season.
