  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 12, 2013) Before commencing the official 2013 slate, the Rutgers University volleyball team will hold its annual Scarlet and White Scrimmage on Sunday, August 25th at 4 p.m. in the College Ave Gym. The squad will be split into two teams and the scrimmage will be treated like a regular match. Admission to the event is free to all fans.

RU enters a new year after coming off one of its best seasons in recent history. The Scarlet Knights finished with an overall record of 18-12 (4-11 BIG EAST), marking the most wins for the program since the 2000 campaign. Additionally, Rutgers managed its first winning season since the 2004 team went 16-10 and notched its fourth straight season with double-digit victories.

Head coach CJ Werneke, who enters his sixth season at the helm of the Scarlet Knights, added a total of six newcomers to join the eleven returning letterwinners.

Despite graduating two starters, the squad returns a solid core that played a critical role in the resurgence of the program last year.

Arguably one of, if not the most, impressive dimension of the 2012 squad was the defense- which ranked third in the BIG EAST in digs/set, averaging 16.7 a game. Rising senior Tracy Wright (Fair Lawn, N.J.) was critical to the Scarlet Knights’ defensive success, as she came up with a team-high 356 digs (seventh on RU’s single-season list), despite an injury-shorted season.

Complementing Wright’s efforts in the back-row were defensive specialists Ali Schroeter (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Ronnie Komisarek (San Mateo, Calif.), who completed their rookie campaigns averaging 2.88 and 2.61 digs/set, respectively. Schroeter reached the 20-dig plateau on four separate occasions last season, while Komisarek finished with double-digit digs 14 times and tied for first on the team with 27 aces.

On the offensive end, Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) looks to build on a solid freshman year, in which she led the team with 3.43 kills per set (sixth in the league). Lassa was recognized for her efforts by earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (Aug. 27) and being named to the Hurricane Invitational All-Tournament team. She finished the season with 11 double-doubles.

RU opens the 2013 season on the road in Bloomington, Ind. on Friday, August 30th at the Indiana Invitational. There, the Scarlet Knights will meet future Big Ten opponent, Indiana, while also facing Kent State and Robert Morris. Rutgers hosts its first home contest of the year on September 11th against in-state rival, Seton Hall, at 7 p.m. in the College Ave. Gym.
