Rutgers Volleyball Welcomes Seton Hall Wednesday for Home Opener
Scarlet Knights begin home slate after seven straight road games to open season

    PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 10, 2013) – The Rutgers volleyball team welcomes in-state rival Seton Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 11 to the College Ave. Gym at 7 p.m. for the 2013 home opener. The Scarlet Knights began the season with seven consecutive contests on the road.

    The Scarlet Knights will meet the Pirates for the 35th time in program history. RU leads the series against SHU with a 19-15 record. Last year, Rutgers dropped a five-set decision to the Pirates by scores of 18-25, 17-25, 25-21, 26-24 and 7-15 in South Orange, N.J. Sophomore outside hitter Megan Stephenson (Burbank, Calif.) led RU in the loss with a career-high 20 kills on 53 attempts to finish the game with a .226 clip, while sophomore defensive specialist Ali Schroeter (Bakersfield, Calif.) contributed a team-high 23 digs.

    Rutgers enters the non-conference match with a 3-4 record, most recently going 1-3 at the Candlewood Suites Invitational hosted by Syracuse over the weekend. RU’s win came against Stony Brook in a five-set thriller on Saturday, Sept. 7. The Scarlet Knights fell to Oakland and Syracuse on Friday, Sept. 6 in four and five sets, respectively and also dropped a four-set decision to Colorado on Saturday morning.

    Sophomore outside hitter Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) was named to the Candlewood Suites Invitational All-Tournament team after leading RU over the four games with 68 kills, 47 digs, nine blocks and six aces. Lassa notched double-digit kills in all four matches and also recorded two double-doubles.

    Seton Hall enters the contest with a 1-5 mark. The Pirates’ lone win coming against Army on Aug. 31. SHU is led by sophomore middle blocker Amanda Hansen, who has tallied 67 kills on the year. Senior libero Alyssa Warren leads the defense with 110 digs and is averaging 4.07 digs/set, while junior Shelbey Manthorpe has dished out 214 assists as the team’s primary setter.
