Rutgers Volleyball Continues Play at Delaware Volleyball Invitational
Scarlet Knights set to meet Blue Hens, Paladins and Pioneers

    PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 12, 2013) –   The Rutgers volleyball team heads to Newark, Del. on Friday, Sept. 13 to participate in the 37th annual Delaware Volleyball Invitational. The Scarlet Knights will meet the host Blue Hens (Sept. 13), as well as Furman University (Sept. 14) and Sacred Heart University (Sept. 14)  in the two-day tournament.

    RU enters the tournament after dropping a five-set decision to Seton Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 11 in its home opener at the College Ave. Gym. The Scarlet Knights battled back from an 0-2 deficit to win the third and fourth sets, before dropping the decisive frame, 16-14.

    The Scarlet Knights begin tournament play on Friday, Sept. 13 at 7:00 p.m. against Delaware at the Bob Carpenter Center.  RU goes on to face the Paladins at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14 and will conclude tournament play at 4:30 p.m. on the same day.

    Sophomore outside hitter Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) leads RU on the year with 110 kills and 81 digs. Lassa has notched three double-doubles this season, including a 26 kill, 21 dig performance against Stony Brook on Sept. 7. Both totals were career-highs for the second-year Scarlet Knight.

    Sophomore defensive specialist Ali Schroeter (Bakersfield, Colo.) leads the defense with 136 digs. She currently averages 4.12 digs/set, which is good for fourth in the American Athletic Conference. Schroeter has finished with double-digit digs in seven of RU’s eight contests.

    Delaware Notes

    Rutgers’ match against the Blue Hens will be the 24th meeting between the two schools. The Scarlet Knights lead the series with a 12-11 record. In their last meeting during the 2010 season, Rutgers fell in straight sets.

    Delaware enters its invitational with a 3-4 record, most recently falling to the University of Pennsylvania in five sets on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The Blue Hens led the match 2-0, but the Quakers rallied back to win the final three sets and the match. Friday’s matchup between the Scarlet Knights and the Blue Hens will be Delaware’s home opener.

    Sophomore outside hitter Katie Hillman enters the match with two double-doubles on the year. Hillman leads the Blue Hens with 94 kills on the year. Delaware is led by head coach Bonnie Kenny who is in her 12th year.

    Furman Notes

    The Scarlet Knights have faced the Paladins just one other time in program history. The meeting resulted in a straight set victory for RU in 2003.

    Furman enters the tournament with a 1-6 mark on the year. The Paladins recorded their only win of the year against South Carolina on Sept. 7 in four sets. The squad dropped its first four matches of the year before picking up the win.

    Furman is led by senior middle blocker Christina Dorismond who has a team-high 76 kills and is averaging 3.04 per set. Fellow senior Elle Ross leads the defense with 96 digs as the libero. The squad is coached by Michelle Young, who is in her 14th season at the helm.

    Sacred Heart Notes

    RU has met the Pioneers three times in its history and has notched one win. In their last meeting in 2011, Sacred Heart secured a three-set win.

    Sacred Heart has posted a 4-2 mark through its first six games of the season. One of the Pioneers’ losses came against Stony Brook in four sets on Aug. 30. The Scarlet Knights faced and defeated the Seawolves in five sets on Sept 7.

    Senior outside Dianis Mercado leads the Pioneers with a team-high 67 kills on the year. Rookie Kiki Robinson leads the squad with 234 assists as the primary setter.
