RU Volleyball Heads to Pitt Panther Invitational
Scarlet Knights will meet Pittsburgh, Morehead State and Cornell

    PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 19, 2013) –   The Rutgers volleyball team heads to Pittsburgh, Pa., on Friday, Sept. 20 to participate in the Pitt Panther Invitational. The two-day competition will mark the final tournament and non-conference contests of the 2013 campaign for the Scarlet Knights. RU will meet Morehead State and the host Panthers on Friday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, before wrapping up the invitational on Saturday, Sept. 21 against Cornell at 10 a.m.

    Rutgers enters the Pitt Panther Invitational after dropping all three contests at the Delaware Volleyball Invitational last weekend. The Scarlet Knights fell in five sets to both Delaware and Sacred Heart and lost to Furman in four. Sophomore outside hitter Alex Lassa (Eagle. Colo.) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

    Morehead State Notes

    Rutgers has faced Morehead State just one other time in program history coming away with a four-set victory in 1983 by scores of 15-11, 7-15, 18-14, 15-10.

    The Eagles enter this weekend’s tournament with a 6-4 record, most recently going 2-1 last week in its own Eagle Challenge Tournament. MSU fell 3-1 to West Virginia before bouncing back with 3-1 wins over Hampton and Campbell.

    MSU is led by senior outside hitter Aryn Bohannon who has tallied 119 kills and 121 digs on the year. Senior libero Leslie Schellhaas leads the squad with 216 digs and recently surpassed the 1,000 dig plateau.

    Pittsburgh Notes

    A former BIG EAST opponent, the Scarlet Knights and Panthers have matched up 33 times, with Pitt holding a 27-6 advantage. Last year, RU fell to Pitt in five sets (31-33, 17-25, 25-23, 25-17, 11-15) in the College Ave. Gym on Sept. 23.

    The Panthers host their first home matches of the year after opening the 2013 campaign with 10 straight away contests. Pitt enters the invitational with a 7-3 mark, most recently going 2-1 at last weekend’s USF Invitational, defeating the host South Florida Bulls in five sets and sweeping Florida Atlantic in three. The lone loss came against No. 22 Purdue in five sets.

    Pitt is led by junior outside hitter Jessica Wyne who has put down 123 kills this season. Junior libero Delaney Clesen has come up with a team-high 159 digs and is fourth on the team in aces with eight.

    Cornell Notes

    The Scarlet Knights have split the four matchups they have played against the Big Red in program history. In the team’s last meeting in 1997, RU came away with a straight-set win (15-4, 15-8, 15-11).

    The Big Red come in with a 2-4 mark, most recently going 1-2 at the Long Island Brooklyn Tournament. Cornell dropped a five-set decision to the host Blackbirds and also lost to Colgate in straight sets. The team’s lone win came against Fairfield in three sets.

    Senior outside hitter Kelly Marble leads Cornell with 76 putdowns to average 3.30 kills/set. Marble is second on the team with 66 digs.
