Rutgers Volleyball Falls to Morehead State to Open Pitt Panther Invitational
Schroeter comes up with match-high 23 digs in straight-set loss

  • PITTSBURGH, PA. (September 20, 2013) –   The Rutgers volleyball team (3-9) opened the Pitt Panther Invitational with a straight-set loss to Morehead State (7-4) Friday afternoon. Rutgers fell by scores of 19-25, 19-25 and 20-25.

    Sophomore defensive specialist Ali Schroeter (Bakersfield, Calif.) finished with a match-high 23 digs to lead the Scarlet Knights. The second-year player has now recorded double-digit digs in 11 of the Scarlet Knights’ 12 matches.

    Sophomore outside hitter Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) led all RU hitters with nine kills on 29 attacks to finish the match with a .241 hitting percentage. Lassa added seven digs and two blocks.

    Morehead state was led by Courtney Smith’s 15 kills and nine digs.

    RU found itself trailing early in the first set, down 11-4 before scoring four straight to come within three points (11-8). The Scarlet Knights pressed on and got within a single digit at 17-16, before the Eagles forged forward and closed out the six-point win. MSU went on to win the second set by an identical score as the first, opening the stanza with a 4-0 advantage. Rutgers battled back and evened the score at 8-8 and then 15-15, before a 6-1 Morehead State run put the game out of reach.

    The Scarlet Knights bounced back in the next frame, opening a 6-2 lead until the Eagles came back to tie the game at seven. The set was evenly matched, with neither team lead by more than two points, until a 5-1 MSU run made the score 16-12. RU did get within striking distance after rattling off two-straight points to make the score 16-14, but the Eagles closed out the win and match out-scoring the Scarlet Knights by a 9-6 margin.

    Rutgers continues tournament play tonight against the host Panthers at 7 p.m.
