PITTSBURGH, PA. (September 20, 2013) – The Rutgers volleyball team (3-10) dropped a four-set decision to tournament host, Pittsburgh (8-4), at the Pitt Panther Invitational Friday evening. The Scarlet Knights opened the match with a 28-26 set-one victory, but went on to lose the next three games by scores of 17-25, 15-25 and 11-25.
Sophomore outside hitter Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) led RU with 12 kills, while classmate Ali Schroeter (Bakersfield, Calif.) contributed a team-high 19 digs as the team’s libero.
Setters Nicole Bayer (Concord, Ohio) and Anna Sudbury (Tomahawk, Wis.) dished out 19 and 11 assists, respectively.
Pitt was led by Jessica Wynn, who notched a double-double of 18 kills and 23 digs.
RU captured a thrilling first set victory, after forming a 7-2 run to break a tie game and jump in front 17-12. Pitt responded with a run of its own, to come within a single digit at 22-21. The hosts continued to keep the pressure on, eventually tying the score at 23. Three tied scores followed, including the Panthers getting as close as match-point, but an unforced Pitt error gave Rutgers the win.
The Scarlet Knights managed to keep the score close all through the second set, until a 10-0 Panther run closed out the stanza. The hosts struck early in the third and fourth sets to establish leads they would not relinquish.
Rutgers wraps up tournament play and will compete in its final non-conference contest of the season tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. against Cornell.
