  • NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (September 27, 2013) –   In its American Athletic Conference opener, the Rutgers Volleyball team (4-11, 0-1 AAC) dropped a straight-set decision to the University of Houston (8-7, 1-0 AAC) at the College Ave. Gym on Friday night. The Cougars defeated the Scarlet Knights by scores of 21-25, 24-26 and 15-25.

“It just seems like late in games our maturity and age is getting the best of us,” said head coach C.J. Werneke following the match.  “It’s not the talent, because we get to 21-17 and that happens with talent.  We just need to figure out the mental block late in games that’s hindering us from crossing the finish line with a win.”

Sophomore defensive specialist Ali Schroeter (Bakersfield, Calif.) led the RU defense with 13 digs. Schroeter has now recorded double-digit digs in all but one of RU’s matches.

Second-year outside hitter Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) tied with classmate Mikaela Matthews (San Diego, Calif.) for the team-lead in kills, as they each recorded eight putdowns. Matthews finished the match with a .417 hitting percentage, recording her eight kills on 12 attempts.

The Cougars were led by Emily Howard’s 12 kills.

After dropping a tightly-contested first set, Rutgers seemed to be heading toward a second set win, as the team led by seven points at 21-14. Houston would ultimately close out the frame on a 12-3 run however, to capture the come-from-behind victory. Matthews recorded five of her eight kills in the second set alone to finish the stanza with a .833 hitting percentage.

The Cougars carried the momentum into the third stanza, as an 8-1 spurt mid-way through gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the set.

Rutgers continues conference play this Sunday, Sept. 29, as it hosts SMU in the College Ave. Gym at 1 p.m.
