Bronx, N.Y. (October 20, 2009) – The Rutgers volleyball team hopes to end a three-match skid Wednesday night when it travels to Fordham for a 7 p.m. match at Rose Hill Gym in Bronx, N.Y.
Wednesday’s showdown will be the last non-conference contest of the season and will begin a four-match road swing for the Scarlet Knights (8-13, 1-6 BIG EAST). Following the Fordham contest, Rutgers will travel to Seton Hall (Oct. 24), DePaul (Oct. 31) and Notre Dame (Nov. 1). The Scarlet Knights are 2-5 on the road this season.
Last weekend, Rutgers had tough outings in conference play as it was blanked by Cincinnati on Saturday and Louisville on Sunday. The Scarlet Knights are currently on a five-match skid in conference action.
Fordham (9-15, 1-7 A-10) snapped an 11-match slide with a 3-0 win at La Salle last Saturday. Rutgers leads the all-time series with Fordham by a 6-3 advantage, but the Rams have won the past three matchups. Last season, Fordham defeated Rutgers by a 3-0 mark at College Avenue Gym.
“Going back on the road just gives us another opportunity to compete,” said Rutgers head coach CJ Werneke. “We are looking forward to the opportunity to go to Fordham. We learn more about ourselves in competition than in practice so we will make the most of this match.”
Junior outside hitter Caitlin Saxton (Encinitas, Calif.) played well this past weekend as she scored a combined 26 kills on a .270 attack percentage. On the season, the co-captain has notched double-digit kills in eight of RU’s 12 three-set matches and leads the squad in kills with 249.
Senior libero Jamie Godfrey (Rahway, N.J.) scooped 24 digs over the weekend to put her career total at 827, which places her 10th on the school’s all-time list. Godfrey passed former Scarlet Knight Jennifer Prosek, who tallied 818 digs from 1992-95. Former Scarlet Knight Mara Prisditis (1994-97) is in ninth place with 847 digs.
Peter Volkert is in his sixth year of leading the Rams. Kailee May leads Fordham in kills with 250. She had nine against LaSalle on Saturday.
