Curtis Leads Rutgers to First BIG EAST Victory

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Freshman Hannah Curtis (Wasilla, Alaska) tallied a career-high 20 kills and hit a remarkable .704 percent to lead the Rutgers volleyball team to its first BIG EAST win of the season, 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-12) over West Virginia Sunday afternoon at the College Ave. Gym.

Curtis made only one error the entire match and converted on 20 of her 27 attack attempts. Sophomores Caitlin Saxton (Encinitas, Calif.) and Lauren Voss (Hartland, Wis.) also recorded double figures in kills with 11 and 10 respectively. Saxton added a career-high 17 digs for her fifth double-double of the year. Senior Roxy Calder (Oceanside, Calif.) dished out a match-high 42 assists in the RU win.

The Scarlet Knights improve to 2-18 overall and 1-9 in BIG EAST play, while the Mountaineers drop to 7-17 on the year and 0-10 in league action.

“We’ve been working towards this moment all season,” said head coach CJ Werneke. “It’s been all about being competitive day in and day out. The last two matches have been very competitive and today we finally pushed through with a win.

“We’ve been waiting for Hannah to break out of her shell and today she did that in a big way. It’s really a tribute to her as she’s taken everything we’ve given her and it showed today.”

After splitting the first two sets, RU used a 7-1 run midway through the third set to take a 20-14 lead. The Scarlet Knights wouldn’t look back from there as they took the third set 25-18 and garnered control of the match.

In set four, Rutgers led wire-to-wire. After jumping out to a 3-0 lead, the Scarlet Knights continued their stellar play throughout the set, never relinquishing the momentum. RU took its largest lead (13 points) on a Curtis kill on match point.

West Virginia was led by three players with nine kills each. Abby Raines added a team-best 15 digs to go along with her nine kills.

Rutgers will play its final two home matches of the year next weekend. On Nov. 7 the Scarlet Knights host DePaul at 7 p.m. and the match will air live on RU-TV. On Nov. 9 it will be senior day at the College Ave. Gym when RU takes on Notre Dame at 2 p.m.
