FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Rutgers University volleyball team wrapped up competition at the Hilton Garden Inn/Northern Arizona Invitational Saturday afternoon as the Scarlet Knights dropped 3-0 decisions to both Akron and host NAU.
Two newcomers, Caitlin Saxton (Encinitas, Calif.) and Hannah Curtis (Wasilla, Alaska) led the Scarlet Knights (0-3) against NAU as the duo combined for 17 kills. Saxton was just one kill shy of a double-double as she paced the team with nine kills and 10 digs.
The Lumberjacks (2-0) had three players reach double figures in kills, led by Lexi Sullivan's 17. Jana Mays-Robinson led all players with 45 assists.
In the afternoon match against Akron (1-2), the Scarlet Knights played their best set of the tournament in the second game. Rutgers raced out to an 11-6 advantage before a 15-10 Akron run would knot the game at 21. The young Scarlet Knights team would respond though and earn four game points. However the Zips came up with big shots on each occasion and would eventually capture the marathon game 35-33.
Sophomore Emma Chrystal (Portage, Mich.) led all RU players with 12 kills, while freshman setter Kallie Pence (College Station, Texas) recorded a team-high 37 assists. Akron was paced by Brionna Patterson, who tallied a game-high 17 kills to go along with nine digs.
After the tournament, Saxton was named to the Hilton Garden Inn/NAU Invitational All-Tournament Team. The sophomore transfer was second on the team in both kills (23) and digs (19) during the three matches.
Rutgers will next head to Fairfax, Va. to compete in the George Mason Tournament Sept. 5-6. The Scarlet Knights will take on New Mexico, LaSalle and Liberty.
