Rutgers Picks Up First Victory of the Season

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Rutgers volleyball team put forth its best performance of the young season Saturday afternoon, downing LaSalle 3-0 and taking a set off 2007 NCAA Tournament participants and currently undefeated Liberty in a 3-1 loss on the final day of the George Mason Tournament in Fairfax, Va.

The Scarlet Knights kicked off the day by snapping their 17-match losing streak that dated back to last season. The 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-12) win was RU's first victory since a win over BIG EAST foe Georgetown on Sept. 28, 2007.

Sophomore Caitlin Saxton (Encinitas, Calif.) posted her first career double-double with a match-high 10 kills and 12 digs. Junior Kyra Thompson (Tucson, Ariz.) added eight kills and a team-high 13 digs, while senior Roxy Calder (Oceanside, Calif.) contributed 10 digs and tied her career-high with three aces in the win.

Amy McKeon led LaSalle (1-4) with five kills, while teammate Jackie Kushman had a match-high 14 digs.

In the second match, Rutgers continued its momentum from its morning win into an early lead against Liberty. The Flames (6-0), who captured the 2007 Big South Conference crown, trailed by as many as four points, but battled back to tie the opening set at 24-24. Thompson, who tallied a team-best 10 kills in the match and six kills in the first set, finished off back-to-back attacks to give RU the one set advantage.

Liberty responded though in the final three sets of the match, holding RU to no better than 16 points. Freshman Kallie Pence (College Station, Texas) had 36 assists, just one off her season-high.

Nicki Scripko led the Flames with 18 kills, 9 digs and a .500 hitting percentage. Brittany Pacella and Jessica Nelson also posted double figures in kills, while Kelly Haseman led the Liberty squad with 16 digs.

The Scarlet Knights will conclude their tournament schedule at the Davidson College Tournament next weekend, Sept. 12-13. RU will take on George Mason, UNC-Charlotte and host Davidson in the two day event.
