Rutgers Basketball Meets Scarlet Letters Pen Pals
Apr 25 | Men's Basketball
Somerset, N.J. (April 25, 2012) – Rutgers men’s basketball visited the Somerset Intermediate School today as part of the Scarlet Letters Pen Pal Program. Through the initiative, which is overseen by academic advisor Randi Larson, players correspond with fifth grade students via letters that promote the value of education, good study habits and a healthy lifestyle.
Students asked the Scarlet Knights a bevy of questions to find out more about them. In return, the players asked the students about their lives, while also signing autographs and grabbing snacks.
The Scarlet Knights have taken a proactive approach to civic responsibility under head coach Mike Rice. The team participates in a multitude of community outreach initiatives, including “Tickets to Reading Rewards,” “Read Across America” and “Toys for Tots” programs. Earlier this year, Rutgers players volunteered at Elijah’s Promise, a soup kitchen in New Brunswick that seeks to move people from hunger to wholeness. The team also visited the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and helped with the United Way’s Gifts of the Season toy drive.
