RU Softball Supports Strikeout Cancer Initiative
Apr 22 | Softball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 22, 2013) - The Rutgers softball team, led by senior Abbey Houston (New Egypt, N.J.), joined forces with the Notre Dame softball program to support the school's third annual Strikeout Cancer initiative from April 12-14 in South Bend, Ind.
The Scarlet Knights raised a total of $1,300 for the initiative in a two week span, after Houston agreed to organize a fundraising plan to support the cause.
"I'm taking a principles of leadership class, and for the class you have to do a leadership service project," Houston said. "Notre Dame asked us around when I got the project assignment to do a fundraiser for their Strike Out Cancer game. I figured I would take that on and make it my responsibility to lead the team in fundraising."
As part of the effort, each Scarlet Knight was responsible for selling 10 laminated softballs to be displayed on RU's dugout for each home contest. The team also received contributions from fans during home games at the RU Softball Complex.
All the fundraising was done in the two weeks leading up to Notre Dame's Strike Out Cancer weekend.
"All the girls really liked doing it and they said it's a good idea for the future," Houston said.
All proceeds benefitted the Memorial Children's Hospital Pediatric Oncology Clinic as part of the Strikeout Cancer celebration. Notre Dame Softball raised more than $35,000 during the first two years of its initiative.
