Softball Takes Trip to Stony Brook

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 31, 2015) -- Rutgers softball will take a Wednesday trip up to Long Island, as the Scarlet Knights will battle against Stony Brook in an afternoon doubleheader. The first game of the day is set for 3 p.m.

Last weekend, RU (14-9, 4-2 Big Ten) picked up its second series victory in conference play at Purdue. The Scarlet Knights bookended the series with victories, shutting out Purdue 5-0 in the opener, and then earning a 2-1 victory in 10 innings to close the weekend in West Lafayette. The Scarlet Knights have won consecutive road series to open Big Ten Conference play, and have won nine of their past 12 games.

In the series at Purdue, junior Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) led the Scarlet Knights with a .500 batting average and a .833 slugging percentage. Huang registered two triples in back-to-back contests as each resulted in a run scored for the junior. Classmate Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) also shined in the weekend series, highlighted by a 3-for-5 performance at the plate in the final contest.

Senior Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) continues to excel on the rubber for RU, recently being named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week after posting a 0.00 ERA through 17 innings against the Boilermakers, tossing two complete games. Landrith lowered her ERA to 3.36 for the 2014-15 campaign over a team-high 81.1 innings.


Stony Brook (10-8, 0-0 America East) enters the matchup on a six-game win streak. On Tuesday afternoon, the Seawolves shutout Columbia, 8-0, to remain unbeaten on their home field.

Offensively, the Seawolves are buoyed by the 1-2 punch of Bria Green and Shayla Giosia. Green leads the team in batting average (.439), home runs (7), total bases (45), RBI (19) and is slugging .947. Giosia is hitting .379 and has supplied five home runs and 15 RBI.

In the circle for Stony Brook, Jane Sallen has appeared in 14 of the team's 18 games, while boasting a 2.82 ERA and throwing seven complete games.


Rutgers holds a 7-5 advantage in the all-time series against Stony Brook. The teams last met on April 17, 2013 for a doubleheader at the RU Softball Complex. The Seawolves took a 3-1 win in the first game, while the Scarlet Knights grabbed a 7-1 victory in the second to split the day.
