Baseball Edged in Nightcap at George Mason, 6-5
Feb. 27, 2016
FAIRFAX, Va. - Junior Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) hit a grand slam to give Rutgers baseball the lead in the fifth inning, but the Scarlet Knights ultimately took a 6-5 loss to George Mason in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader at Spuhler Field. The series is now tied at one with RU earning an 11-5 victory in the opener.
Redshirt junior Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) left with the lead in a no-decision, giving up two earned runs over five innings. In relief, freshman Dante Scafidi (Washington Township, N.J.) followed with one inning, while classmate Serafino Brito (Oakland, N.J.) tossed the last two frames with three strikeouts.
Marcinczyk connected for his ninth career home run and first grand slam to lead Rutgers (1-4) offensively. It was the first grand slam for a Scarlet Knight since Ross Costello on Feb. 24, 2013 at Old Dominion. Fifth-year senior John Jennings (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) and freshman Mike Martinez (West New York, N.J.) both collected two hits, as senior R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.) drew three walks to bring his season on-base percentage to .625 through four games played.
Defensively, Martinez gunned out a runner at home to make it five consecutive games to start the season that RU has registered an outfield assist. Sophomore Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.) also eliminated two runners off the base paths with his play at third base.
The Patriots (1-4) jumped out quickly with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.
It would stay that way until the top of the fifth when the Scarlet Knights broke through. Junior Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) worked a leadoff walk and moved up on a single by Martinez. After freshman Jawuan Harris (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) laid down a sacrifice bunt, Devish walked to load the bases. George Mason induced a short pop fly to pull close to escaping the jam, but Marcinczyk capitalized on the situation with a long drive that cleared the right field wall.
However, GMU put up single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the score and went ahead, 6-4, in the seventh with two across. Then in the top of the eighth, fifth-year senior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.) singled and eventually scored on an RBI ground out by Freeman. That would prove to be the final score of the day.
Zach Mort (1-0) closed out his own win with three innings out of the bullpen for George Mason, as Brito (0-1) took the loss. The Patriots reached 10 hits and took advantage of three RU errors.
The rubber game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. from Spuhler Field. Sophomore John O'Reilly (Northvale, N.J.) is slated to make the start of the mound for the Scarlet Knights.
