PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers student radio station, WRSU (88.7 FM), will re-air the women's basketball 1982 AIAW Championship game, along with recently-taped interviews from several members of the championship team in conjunction with Rutgers Day on Saturday, April 29.
Audio of the championship game was recently found by WRSU alum Jim Berman, who was one of game's student broadcasters.
The special, which will air from 8-11 a.m., will include the entire WRSU broadcast of the championship game by Berman and Jeff Gerstenblatt, along with “Knightline”, the post-game show hosted by Jon Newman and Geoff Sadow.
Current WRSU General Manager Dominick Savino will also catch up with members of the 1982 team, including head coach Theresa Grentz, Mary and Patty Coyle, Chris Dailey, Patty Delehanty and sportswriters Mel Greenberg and Paul Franklin. Additionally, the former WRSU broadcast team from 1982 will join to the show to reminisce about the season and what the championship game has meant to the Rutgers women's basketball program.
The 1982 Rutgers women's basketball team, who recently celebrated their 35th anniversary, put together a 25-7 overall mark culminating with the AIAW national championship. Led by a strong senior contingent of Delehanty, the Coyle sisters, June Olkowski and Terry Dorner, the Lady Knights defeated powerhouse Texas, 83-77, for the championship title. In the championship game at the Palestra in Philadelphia, MVP Patty Coyle scored a career-high 30 points while Dorner added in 25.
Following the season, Olkowski, who averaged 14.6 points and 7.6 rebounds during her illustrious RU career, became the second Rutgers player to be named a Kodak All-American and would later become the first Lady Knight women's basketball player to have her jersey retired.
